We needed a better cable in critical areas of our control system so TPC showed us their Super-Trex® and Trex-Onics® products but TPC challenged us to try anything to cause a failure. We decided to try the most abusive thing we could think of — run the cable over with a 60,000 lb track rig. When the initial test didn’t cause a failure, we performed a 0 degree turn, pivoting directly on the cable. The only damage to the cable was the abraded outer casing. Since this experiment 3 years ago, we have been using Super-Trex® and Trex-Onics® for our mission-critical cable assemblies, without a failure.

Case Study: Importance of a safe, dynamic industrial cable storage & deployment system

PROBLEM:

A leading energy company responsible for powering millions of homes and businesses across several Western and Midwestern states was looking for a better way to store and deploy medium voltage cables to be used for the maintenance and repair of utility-owned substations. In the event of unexpected damage and subsequent maintenance of a substation, medium voltage cables first need to be delivered to a site and then safely deployed to connect with the mobile substation.

 

The customer’s was using a standard trailer where cables could only deploy in one direction, requiring the trailer to be parked precisely to allow cable to pay off in the desired direction. Space was tight, visibility was poor, and there was often damage occurring to the trailer, equipment, and cables due to imperfect positioning of the trailer. Personnel were at risk for injury due to the antiquated, labor-intensive methods that were being used to load, store, and deploy cable.

RESULT:

TPC's engineering team designed a cable management system of superior quality and performance.  Featuring a pivoting reel turret, the customer is now able to properly store medium
voltage cables, efficiently deploy them when needed, and safely protect operators from harm and equipment from damage.
