Customer Background
A leading renewable energy provider operates dozens of wind farms across North America and has invested heavily in infrastructure to support its mission of delivering sustainable power. The company is a pioneer in repowering older wind turbines to extend their lifespan and boost performance.
Challenge
During a large-scale repowering initiative involving GE 1.5 MW wind turbines, the customer encountered a recurring failure in the slip ring harnesses. The original cable jackets were being damaged during turbine operation, and the internal conductors weren’t holding up under the continuous movement and stress. As a result, more than 60 turbines were offline, leading to decreased energy output and operational delays.
Amphenol TPC Wire & Cable engineered a custom Slip Ring Harness (MA31439F022) designed to handle the demanding conditions inside the GE 1.5 turbine nacelle. Key features included:
This design provided a long-lasting, application-specific solution to eliminate recurring downtime.
Implementation

Collaboration was key to the success of this project. Amphenol TPC coordinated closely with site managers, purchasing teams, and maintenance personnel to understand the turbine configuration and performance demands. Cables and components were built ahead of schedule, and the customer received regular updates throughout the process to ensure transparency and alignment.
