Protected Under Pressure: Earning the IP69K Rating

Posted by TPC Wire & Cable Corp. on August 26, 2019

With a rising emphasis on safety protocols in facilities, many of the products and equipment used in manufacturing plants must undergo and pass rigorous testing procedures and maintain a long list of standards. For a wide range of markets, including food processing, petrochemical, transportation, and wood pulp and paper, parts strive to carry an IP69K rating.

What is an IP69K rating?

IP69K is an environmental rating that provides protection against ingress, or admittance of dust and high temperature, high pressure water making products with this certification ideal for use in conditions where equipment must be carefully sanitized. In industries such as food processing, where hygiene and cleanliness is important, equipment must be able to withstand continuous high pressure, high temperature wash-down practices. The combination of water, chemicals, high pressures, and temperatures can prove fatal for electronic cord and cable, the IP69K rating offers complete assurance that the piece of equipment has undergone and passed the tests is both durable and resistant and corresponds with the highest protection rating on the scale.

How are the products tested?

IP69K Rating Procedure

Products that carry the IP69K rating are subject to a heated high-pressure spray and must not allow any ingress of water that might interfere with the correct operation of equipment.

The water is heated to 176°F/80°C and sprayed at a pressure of 1,500 PSI for 2 minutes on the mated connection. During the two-minute process the connected assembly is rotated and subjected to the heated high-pressure spray positioned at angles of 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° for 30 seconds each. The goal of the testing is to simulate high pressure, high temperature cleaning conditions that exist on the plant floor in the food and beverage industry.

The Ingress Protection rating system is an internationally recognized scale and is primarily used in the food and beverage industry. It can also be found in markets such as petrochemical, transportation, and wood, pulp, and paper. Regardless of the industry, the rating helps ensure that electrical connections are secure even when under high-pressure, high temperature conditions allowing plants to clean various areas of the facility faster and more thoroughly.
