Industrial Bus Cables: What Are They and Why Quality Matters

Posted by TPC Wire & Cable Corp. on July 24, 2019

What is an Industrial Bus?

In computing, a bus is referred to as a communication system that transfers data between components. An example would be a USB. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and many devices use this cable, connector, and protocol to interact with a computer.

An industrial bus is a communication system that transfers data between components or devices within different levels at a manufacturing plant: the information level, control level, and field level. Within a bus system there are various communication systems such as DeviceNet, ControlNet, Profibus, and Ethernet.

These cables are used to control many functions at the field level. For example, in order for a controller to maintain a fluid flow, a sensor monitors the volume of fluid and an actuator adjusts the valve to open and close to meet the desired level. All of that information communicated between each function occurs over bus cables.

Other common applications for bus cables include: plc to controller, switches, sensors, and actuators. For example, selector switches, pushbuttons, circuit breakers, motor starters, control delays, temperature sensors, and pressure sensors. These industrial automation areas often occur in clean rooms or harsh spaces. Chemical wash downs, robotic flexing, high heat or petroleum oils are all candidates for abuses in the environment. In these applications and environments, commodity cable will often fail causing unplanned and unwanted shut downs.

TPC Solutions

The cable’s classic design starts with finely stranded conductors that provide high flexibility and a longer flex-life. The Ultra-Shield® configuration and shield construction placed around each pair reduces radiated and conducted electrical noise interference. Our jacket is a halogen-free, flame retardant material that provides protection from environmental abuse and offers resistance to cutting, abrasion, oil and chemicals.
